Espace Montreal: What does succession planning look like in the real estate brokerage industry, particularly in a service-based business?
Jean Laurin: Succession begins with deep reflections. You have to assess the market, understand your context, and define how and where you can make the most impact. It’s about inspiring trust and creating alignment—not just on a logical level, but emotionally as well. Succession is about values—ensuring those around you share your principles and vision. Leading by example is critical; words alone don’t suffice. Ultimately, it’s about building a culture that supports continuity and ensuring actions align with long-term goals.
Espace Montreal: You’ve been deeply involved in Montreal’s business and philanthropic community. How has that shaped your career and leadership?
Jean Laurin: My involvement in organizations like Montreal International, Place des Arts, the Chambre de Commerce, and various foundations (Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital, UQAM) has been transformative. These experiences have given me a holistic view of the city’s interconnected sectors—business, arts, health, and education. They’ve taught me the importance of collaboration and listening. Success isn’t about being the smartest person in the room; it’s about asking the right questions and challenging others to rise. These roles have also built credibility and expanded my network, which has been a key driver of my professional journey.
