Meet May Chen

What is your role at Avison Young?

Global Finance Manager.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

I was recruited from graduate school in 2006 by Wells Fargo Bank to join their Commercial Real Estate Lending Group. I've been in various finance roles in the the industry since.

Who has been the most influential woman in your life?

My mother and grandmother.

What advice would you give women starting out in real estate?

Use your voice and stand up for yourself. Don't expect anyone to see your hard work and acknowledge it. Speak up for yourself and hard work. Ask for the promotion you deserved and earned. A strong man is considered powerful but a strong woman is called a witch. So be the witch and stand up for yourself. Don't be afraid to ask to do things you don't believe you're qualified for, 95% of the time you are more than qualified.

This year's IWD theme is Choose to Challenge. What do you choose to challenge or celebrate to help create more inclusion in your community?

I choose to celebrate the success of women I work with and encourage more young women in AY to go for the big roles.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I've been in the commercial real estate industry for over 15 years.
